The Northern State baseball team dropped a pair of NSIC contests Sunday afternoon down in Sioux Falls as the Wolves lost to Augustana. NSU lost game one 6-1 and game two 4-2. Northern falls to 7-7 overall on the season and 1-3 in NSIC play while the Vikings move to 11-7 and 3-1 in the NSIC.
Matt Stubbs led the Wolves on the day going 3-for-6 from the plate with a double. While
Eric O' Bryan and
Buddy Traxler each recorded two hits in the doubleheader.
The Wolves threatened early in game one as
Trevor Sporrer brought home O'Bryan after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. That was all the damage Northern could do in the inning and Augustana responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and then added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning.
Colton Boucher was saddled with the loss in game one. Boucher pitched five innings and allowed nine hits and five earned runs.
Adam Thompson pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Wolves.
Trailing 2-0 in game two,
Robert Fahlin got an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to score
Riley Shintaffer to cut the Vikings' lead to one, however, Augustana responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning and another in the fifth. NSU got a run in the sixth to cut into the deficit but Augustana relievers held the Wolves hitless over the last two innings.
Cody Johns got the start for the Wolves in the second contest. Johns drops to 1-2 on the year as he pitched seven innings and allowed three earned runs.
Kris Keating had a solid eighth inning of relief for Northern in the loss.
Northern continues its road trip to begin conference play next weekend as the Wolves will play Wayne State in a four-game series. A pair of doubleheaders will be played both Saturday and Sunday with game one beginning each day at 1 p.m.Â
