Moorhead, Minn. – The Northern State University women's basketball bounced back in Northern Sun Conference play, with a Saturday victory over the MSU Moorhead Dragons. The Wolves improve to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The 21 point win marks the Wolves second double-digit victory over MSUM this season
The Wolves started the game on a 17 point run, holding MSUM scoreless in the first six minutes of play. The run was all NSU needed, as they led the full 40 minutes of play. Northern played unselfishly as a team, recording 17 assists in the game, more than doubling that of their opponents.
Devon Brecke recorded a breakout game for NSU, going 5-for-8 from the floor, with a season high 11 points and six rebounds.
Rachel Krogman and
Sadie Stotesbery each matched Brecke's 11 points, while Krogman added eight rebounds and three assists.
As a team the Wolves shot 45.3 percent from the floor, holding the Dragons to a mere 25 percent in the game. Northern recorded only one more rebound in the game, with a total of 26 led by Krogman. The NSU offense improved from a game ago, shooting 33.3 percent from the arch, with
Paige Waytashek leading the attack with two treys. Waytashek recorded eight points in the win.
Megan Mutchler added nine points, one rebound, and three assists, steals, and rebounds in the game.
Sami Smith led the NSU bench with four points, followed by freshmen
Dierra Diegel.
Kara Hofschild and
Lauren Deadrick notched a combined three points, while Deadrick added five rebounds.
The NSU women will return to Wachs Arena to open 2015 with a pair of home contests versus Winona State and Upper Iowa, January 2
nd and 3
rd. Game times are set for 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday with the men to follow each day.
