Volleyball Closes Out Weekend in Impressive Fashion

It was a different day, but almost the exact same result in day two at the LaQuinta/Drury Kickoff Classic for the Northern State volleyball team as the Wolves picked up a pair of victories on the day.

NSU (4-0) opened with a 3-1 win over Arkansas Tech in the morning. After dropping a hard-fought first set 25-23, the Wolves rattled off three-straight set wins 25-16, 25-22 and 25-17. The Wolves had an outstanding attack against the Golden Suns, hitting .336 as a team.

Cari McGarvie led the team with a career-high 17 kills and three aces in the win, McGarvie also had a team-high six blocks. Kelsey Chambers had another solid match picking up her second double-double of 2013 with 15 kills and 14 digs.

Drew Smith picked up a season-best 50 assists in the match. Sami Nygaard had 13 digs and a pair of service aces in the win.
In the afternoon, NSU picked up its third sweep of the tournament as the Wolves defeated host-Drury 25-22, 25-16 and 25-18.

Chambers had a big match in the win, recording 18 kills and eight digs. Jussy Tuscherer had seven kills and 10 digs for the Wolves while McGarvie and Macey Finizio chipped in with six kills apiece. Tori Biach led the squad with four block assists in the win.

Smith grabbed her first double-double of 2013. The setter recorded 36 assists and 12 digs in the match. Northern's 4-0 start is its best start to a season since 2008 when the Wolves started 5-0.

Next week, the Wolves will travel to Mankato, Minn., for the Maverick Invitational.
