Wolves Sweep Minot State in Home Opener

The Northern State volleyball team continued its record-breaking start to the season Saturday evening in the Wolves' home opener as Northern improved to 9-0 and 2-0 in the NSIC with a 3-0 sweep over Minot State. The win was NSU's six sweep of 2013. Set scores went 25-18, 25-13 and 25-15.

Macey Finizio led the Wolves with a season-high 15 kills and a career-best .609 hitting percentage in the victory. Finizio also added a service ace and two block assists.

Kelsey Chambers picked up her fourth double-double of the season as she recorded 13 kills (.417 hitting percentage) and 14 digs. Senior libero Sami Nygaard led Northern with 19 digs and two aces in the match. Nygaard also added a pair of assists.

Setter Drew Smith picked up 40 assists in the match, as well as six assists and a block. Cari McGarvie had nine kills for NSU while Jussy Tuscherer chipped in with six. As a team, the Wolves hit .347 while Minot State mustered just a .038 attack percentage. Northern also recorded four aces in the match and didn't allow a single Beaver ace in the win.

After coming out of the gates a bit slow in set one, Northern went on an 8-1 run to take a big 20-12 lead in the opening set before cruising to the win. In set two, the Wolves were dominant as they ended on a 19-5 run to take a 2-0 advantage into the break. In the third set, NSU never trailed and went on a 12-3 run to close-out the set and the match.

Next up will be three consecutive NSIC road matches as the Wolves will next travel to face MSU Moorhead on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
