The Northern State volleyball team racked up another pair of wins Friday at day one of the Maverick Invitational hosted by Minnesota State. The Wolves picked up their fourth sweep of the season over Black Hills State in the morning and grabbed a 3-1 win over Illinois-Springfield to close out the day. The 6-0 start for NSU is the Wolves' best start to a season since beginning the 1998 campaign 8-0.
After rolling through the first two sets against BHSU, 25-11 and 25-19, NSU showed some fight to pick up the third set, coming from behind and staving-off two set points to win 28-26 to pick up the sweep.
Kelsey Chambers once again led the NSU attack against the Yellow Jackets, recording 18 kills and hitting .389 in the win.
Cari McGarvie added 12 kills and hit .450. While
Macey Finizio and
Jussy Tuscherer each added seven kills as Northern hit .375 as a team and six service aces.
Sami Nygaard had a big match from her libero position, registering a then season-high 15 digs and also had three aces in the match. Meanwhile,
Drew Smith picked up another double-double in 2013 with 40 assists and 11 digs. NSU also did a good job against Black Hills State's star outside hitter Amy O'Neill. O'Neill came into the day averaging nearly 19 kills a match in 2013 and was held to 13 and a .156 hitting percentage in the match.
Against Illinois-Springfield, Northern had a tough four sets against the Prairie Stars, dropping the first set 25-22 before responding with three-straight set wins, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20.
Chambers had a great match for NSU, recording a career-best 23 kills in the victory. Chambers also picked up a double-double by adding 11 digs. Nygaard responded with another season-best of her own against UIS with 18 digs.
Tori Biach recorded a career-best with 11 kills and also led NSU with four block assists in the match. Tuscherer and Finizio added 10 and eight kills, respectively. Smith had another big match from her setter position, recording 48 assists, just two off her career-best. Smith did however record a career-best four service aces in the win.
Saturday, the Wolves will play just one match coming at 1 p.m. against host school and NSIC foe Minnesota State. The match against the Mavericks, however, will not be considered a conference match.
