SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Northern State baseball squad dropped a pair of one-run games Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 and 7-6 to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball action. The games were played on the campus of Augustana College due to field conditions in both Marshall and Aberdeen.
NSU slipped to 13-23 overall an 6-16 in league play. SMSU is now 12-22-1 on the season and 7-13 in the loop.
The Mustangs used up all their Game 1 offense - runs, hits and baserunners - as part of a 3-run fifth inning, taking advantage of two Northern State errors to plate an unearned run and take a 3-1 lead.
NSU responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Derek Tymesen led off with a single and moved around to score on a
Robert Fahlin groundout. The Wolves had the tying run aboard, but were unable to push the game to extra innings.
NSU tallied six hits to SMSU's three.
Nathan Nietfeld tossed six perfect innings in a complete-game outing, giving up just three hits, two earned runs, no walks and three strikeouts in one of his most dominant outings off the season.
SMSU again used a pair of three-run innings in Game 2 to work around a four-run third for Northern State. NSU tacked on another run in the fifth and held a 6-4 lead after six complete before the Mustangs rallied in the seventh.
The Wolves once again had the tying and go-ahead runs aboard in the bottom fo the ninth, but left both runs on base.
NSU is slated to take on U-Mary on Wednesday and will close out the 2013 slate next weekend, hosting Minnesota-Duluth in a pair of NSIC doubleheaders.
