WINONA, Minn. - The Northern State baseball squad dropped a pair of mid-week road games on Wednesday, falling 6-2 and 16-6 to Winona State. The Warriors rode the bat of senior Cody Strang, who drove in nine runs in the sweep.
Northern State drops to 13-21 on the season and 6-14 in NSIC play. WSU moves to 15-12 overall and 9-4 in the loop, having now won its last four games.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Game 1, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the third inning.
Brent Lawrence drove an opposite field single to right. WSU came up throwing wildly, allowing
Nate Russell to score and pushing Lawrence to second. Lawrence would late score on a passed ball, giving the Wolves the early advantage.
WSU, however, answered with a pair of three-run home runs, one in the fourth and one in the fifth to retake a lead they would not relinquish. The Warriors managed just four hits in the game, but garnered four walks and plated a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
WSU took control of Game 2 early, putting up two in the first, six in the third and two in the fourth. The Wolves hung three on the board in the top of the sixth on a
Derek Tymesen single and a 2-run
Mark Abrahamson double, but the rally wasn't enough.
Abrahamson, who earned the start at designated hitter, went 3-for-3 with a walk for the Wolves.
Trevor Sporrer rapped out three hits, an RBI and a run scored, while
Robbie Rocamora tallied two hits and scored twice as part of a 12-hit showing for the Wolves. NSU was unable to overcome four errors in the game, leading to eight unearned runs for the Warriors.
NSU is slated to take on Southwest Minnesota State in a four-game weekend series on Saturday and Sunday. Game dates and locations have not yet been determined.
