WAYNE, Neb. - The NCAA Central Region's eighth-ranked Wildcats used the late innings of both games on Saturday to edge past the visiting Northern State Wolves in a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games, taking a 9-1 win in the opener and closing with a 4-2 decision in the nightcap.
The Wolves slipped to 13-17 on the season and 6-10 in the loop. WSC moved to 22-10 overall and 14-4 in conference action.
WSC scored a combined eight runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings of Game 1 to push away from a slim 1-0 lead they held after three innings. NSU's
Buddy Traxler broke up the WIldcats' shutout bid with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, accounting for one of three NSU hits and the only run and RBI in the game.
WSC plated single runs in the fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings of Game 2, while the Wolves did the same in the sixth and eighth innings. NSU left six runners aboard through the course of the nine-inning game, four of which were in scoring position.
The Wolves will look to even the count tommorrow, as the two teams complete the four-game set beginning at noon in Wayne.
