Winona, Minn. - Back at it after an eight day break from competition the Northern State University softball team dropped two NSIC contests with Winona State University. The Wolves fell to 13-19 on the year and 5-9 in the conference as the Warriors, on an nine game win streak, improved to 24-6 overall and 9-1 in the loop.

Down early in game one the Wolves fought back with five runs to fall short in a 6-9 loss. Senior Stephanie Horkey gave NSU a chance as she entered in relief with a 1-8 score in favor of the Warriors. Threw 5.1 innings, Horkey allowed only one earned run and two hits in 22 batters faced.

The Wolves began to chip away in the bottom of the fourth after scoring a lone run in the first. Kelsey Robling began the rally with a single to center field. Robling advanced to second on an Eryn Yancy single to left. Morgan Schultz plated the two base runners with a single on the day, adding two RBI to bring her season total to 11. NSU was not done for the inning as Lindsey Hubler stepped to the plate and connected for a single to center and an RBI scoring Schultz.

Northern added one run a piece in the fifth and sixth innings off the bats of Robling and Haley Covais. Robling scored Jordin Novak, who had singled to the short stop, for her second RBI on the day. The freshman Covais blasted her second homerun of the season in the bottom of the sixth with a blast to right center. Freshmen Kelsey Gale also accounted for one Northern hit and run in the game.

Game two was not much better for the Wolves as spotty defense and poor pitching gave up 13 runs in the game off 18 hits and three team errors. The Wolves garnered four hits off WSU ace Ashley Walker, who is 11-0 on the season, from Eryn Yancy, Robling, Gale and Covais. Robling finished the day with three hits in six at bats and two RBIs bringing her season average up to .306.

Stephanie Horkey and sophomore Kami Smesmo each recorded a loss on the day moving their records to 7-10 and 2-6 respectively on the year.

The Wolves look to improve as they take the road and travel to play University of Mary, Thursday from Bismarck at 2 and 4 p.m.
