Kissimmee, F.L. - Continuing to win from the Sunshine State, the Northern State University Softball sweeps in their second to last day of spring break play. The Wolves faced off against Quincy University, 5-0, and Fayetteville State University, 8-2, as they improve to 8-4 on the year. The Hawks of Quincy fall to 4-9, while the Broncos of Fayetteville slide to 1-16 overall.
Sophomore
Kami Smesmo threw the complete game win against the Hawks giving up only one hit in seven innings of workout, while striking out eight in the game.
Eryn Yancy led the hitting attack for NSU going 4-4 from the plate with two RBI on the day, with
Kelsey Gale close behind racking up three hits in four at bats with one RBI.
The Wolves scored first in the game with a Yancy single to center scoring
Caitlin Moran. Moran went 2-4 in the game with the one run. NSU scored in four of their seven innings at the plate, totaling 11 hits as a team.
Kelsey Robling and
Lindsey Hubler each added a hit in the victory.
Moving into the second game of the day the Wolves matched up with Fayetteville State, a team they eight runned just four days prior. The big inning for the Wolves came in the bottom of the sixth where they totaled six runs off of six hits leaving one runner on base. Northern's attack began with a
Haley Covais single up the middle, quickly followed by singles from
Debbie Evans and
Morgan Schultz to opposite sides of the grass. Gale tallied her first RBI of the game scoring Covais off a single to center. Moran added to her hits on the day singling to left and scoring Evans from third base. Robling stepped to the plate knocking in Schultz and Moran off a single to center.
As a team seven Wolves had hits in the game with Covais being the lone wolf with two. Robling led the Wolves with three RBI in the effort. Evans recorded her third win of the season throwing a solid five innings with a total of five strikeouts. Senior
Stephanie Horkey came in for relief in the top of the sixth to throw two innings of scoreless softball with four strikeouts.
Northern will round out their trip tomorrow facing off against Walsh (Ohio), at 10 a.m., and Holy Family, at 2 p.m. Mark your calendars for the Wolves first home games against Minnesota State University Moorhead on March 26th beginning at 3 p.m. in a conference double header.
