Box Score 2 Wayne, Neb. - The Northern State University Softball team drops two conferences games to Wayne State College finishing up their weekend road trip. The Wildcats climb to 14-6 overall and 5-1 in NSIC play while NSU slides to 11-13 on the year and 3-3 in the loop.
The Wolves were down early in game one after starting pitcher
Kami Smesmo gave up four Wildcat runs in the top of the first inning.
Macey Engel recorded her best outing of the year going 3-3 from the play along with strong defensive play. The trio of
Caitlin Moran,
Jordin Novak and
Kelsey Gale added a hit a piece in the Northern effort.
Smesmo suffered her sixth loss of the season allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Stephanie Horkey entered the game for three innings of relief work holding Wayne to one run while allowing only two hits. The only run of the game for the Wolves came off the bat of
Kelsey Robling who grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Moran in the bottom of the third. NSU would eventually lose the game with a final score of 6-1.
Game two was not much better for the Wolves as they fell 9-1 in six innings of play. Horkey recorded the loss on the day as the Wildcats compiled 15 hits and six earned runs.
Northern posted a strong freshmen effort as Gale and Novak led the team with 2-3 performances at the plate.
Eryn Yancy and Engel both added a hit to the NSU team total of six in the game.
The women will be back in action April 3rd taking on Minnesota-Duluth at home. The Wolves will begin the double header match-up at 11 a.m. from Swisher Field.
