Sioux Falls, S.D. - A split on the day leaves the Northern State University Softball with a 3-1 record in NSIC play. With their second split of conference play the Augustana College Vikings move to 2-2 in the league and 13-6 overall as the Wolves sit at 11-11 on the year.
In the first outing of the day for the Wolves
Morgan Schultz ended the Jenelle Trautmann no hitter with a double to left center and a runner on base in a 0-3 deficit.
Eryn Yancy recorded the only RBI of the game scoring Schultz on a ground out to the short stop. Trautmann was a force for the Vikings hitting two homeruns and recording all three RBI in the effort. NSU hurler
Kami Smesmo allowed three earned runs on nine hits in the outing giving up her fifth loss of the season.
The Wolves began the second match-up down by three after two innings of play before they answered back in the bottom of the fourth. With one out in the inning pinch hitter,
Haley Covais, recorded two RBI with one swing of the bat and a double to right center bringing in
Jordin Novak and Debbi Evans. Covais also recorded the third run of the inning with a walk to
Kelsey Robling.
Tied going into the bottom of the seventh Robling lead off the Wolves attack singling to center. Augie proceeded to load the bases giving up both an error and a walk to
Lindsey Hubler and
Macey Engel. Knocking at the front door, Robling scored on a two out wild pitch by Viking ace Trautmann.
Senior
Stephanie Horkey earned her first win of the season entering the game in the fifth inning after an injury to Evans who allowed only three runs on four hits. Six batters notched hits for the Wolves in the game including
Kelsey Gale,
Kalie Maiden, Schultz, Robling, Engel and Covais.
NSU will finish up the road trip taking on Wayne State tomorrow at 12 and 2 p.m. from the Wayne City Softball Complex.
