Sioux Falls, S.D. - The Northern State University Softball team begins conference play with 2-0 record defeating Minnesota State University Moorhead in a double-header match-up from Sioux Falls. The Wolves improve to .500 on the season with a record of 10-10 as the Dragons fall to 2-15 on the year and 0-2 in league play.

Tied at zero through six innings of play the Wolves would strike scoring the only runs of the game. Kelsey Gale started the rally singling to left, quickly followed by Caitlin Moran with a single of her own. With two runners on Morgan Schultz stepped to the plate and with a swift swing sent the ball soaring to left center for her third homerun of the season, tying Kelsey Robling for the team lead.

Five Wolves recorded a hit in the game including; Gale, Moran, Schultz, Eryn Yancy and Lindsey HublerKami Smesmo notched her sixth win of the season allowing on four hits and striking out 11 with no runs given up.

The second game of the day placed the Wolves behind going into the bottom of the first as the Dragons had scored two unearned runs off Northern errors. Answering back with a double through the left side, Robling recorded her 19th and 20th RBI's of the season bringing in Gale and Schultz who had both singled up the middle.

NSU placed two more runs on the board in the bottom of the second for some insurance. Gale singled scoring Debbi Evans from third base who had singled through the left side. Two outs and Gale on second, Robling singled to left for her third RBI of the game and the Wolves fourth run.

Through 5.1 innings, NSU ace Evans was holding strong to a no hitter performance as she gave up five hits and one earned run. Horkey entered in relief of Evans to throw one full inning of softball with only one Dragon hit. Finishing the game for NSU, Smesmo recorded her first save on the year striking out one and holding the Dragons who left two on base in the top of the seventh.

Northern continues conference play tomorrow from Sioux Falls taking on Augustana College at 1 and 3 p.m. Currently the women sit atop the conference with Minot State and Minnesota-Duluth who are all 2-0.
