Kissimmee, F.L. - Sweeping the first day of the Rebel Spring Games, Northern State University scored 12 runs in total. In the first match-up of the day the Wolves topped the Falcons, of Notre Dame College, 1-0 in eight innings. NDC fell to 0-1 on the year dropping the season opener. NSU's bats came alive in game two as they smashed hit after hit, winning 11-1 in five innings against Fayetteville State University. The Broncos fell to 0-9 on the year and will take on NSU again Wednesday at 2 p.m. Both wins move Northern to 4-2 overall.
Tied through seven innings in the first game of the day Northern scored in the first inning of international tie breaker. The Wolves held the Falcons in the top of the 8th only to come up with the lone run of the game and the win in the bottom.
Jordin Novak was placed on second, per the international tie breaker rule, as
Morgan Schultz moved her to third on a ground out to second base.
Kelsey Gale recorded her first career RBI, and the win, scoring Novak on a single to right field.
Caitlin Moran was 2-2 with singles to the short stop and left field. Both Gale and Schultz were 1-3 at the plate.
Kami Smesmo recorded her third win of the season, striking out six and only allowing four hits in eight innings.
In their second game on the day, the Wolves scored first in the top of the third. Moran began the inning singling to center field. Gale stepped to the plate next causing a fielder's choice making it the first and advancing Moran to second.
Kelsey Robling and her big bat stepped to the plate for her first homerun of her senior campaign, a three run jack to centerfield.
The fourth inning brought five runs for the women on two singles, by
Macey Engel and
Debbie Evans, one walk and another long ball from Robling. Topping off the grand total with three runs in the top of the fifth, the Wolves were in place for an early innings win if they held the Broncos in the bottom of the inning.
Fayetteville State fought back with one run in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough to continue the game and the win was awarded to the Wolves, who tallied a season high ten hits.
Both Robling and Engel would bat 1.000 in the game going 2-2. Freshman Haley Covias connected for her first career homerun and two RBI. Gale continued her RBI streak for the day bringing in three more on her one hit for the game. Moran singled twice to the outfield, going 2-3 in the game. Finally Evans and Schultz went 1-3 from the plate and Junior
Lindsey Hubler recorded her first RBI of the season.
Along with a 1-3 effort at the plate, starting pitcher Evans recorded her first career win with five strikeouts and three hits in five innings of play.
Northern is back in action tomorrow taking on University of Indianapolis and Saginaw Valley State at 8 and 10 a.m. central time.
