MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Northern State baseball squad swept a pair of 7-inning games over Bemidji State Friday morning to record their second and third straight victories and complete their stay at the NSIC Metrodome Classic with a 3-1 mark. NSU rallied from a 2-run deficit to take a 4-2 win in Game 1, then led start to finish in a 7-2 victory in Game 2.
The games were the first of the season for the Beavers.
Bemidji State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one inning in the opener, but the Wolves took advantage of a BSU fielding error and four straight two-out hits in the top of the fifth to take the lead.
Brent Lawrence reached on an error and advanced to second on a subsequent groundout. NSU then strung together four straight hits starting with an RBI
Robbie Rocamora double, followed by back-to-back singles from
Tyler Thurston and
Cameron Lehner, which tied the game at 2-2.
Newcomer
Derek Tymesen then capped the rally with a bases-clearing triple to put NSU up 4-2.
NSU's
Hayden Rovengo then came on in relief of starter
Kris Keating to close out the game, throwing three innings of scoreless, hitless ball to earn his first career save. Keating picked up the win, allowing just the two early runs and four total hits, walking none and striking out two.
Game 2 featured early offense from the Wolves, who tallied five hits and two hit batsmen in a five-run second inning to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead after two. NSU tacked on a seventh run in the bottom of the fifth before working around back-to-back walks to lead off the top of the seventh and hold the Beavers to just a two-run rally to preserve the win.
Lehner, Thurston and second-baseman
Danny Fischer each collected two hits in the game, while senior
Clint Manzo picked up the win in his first start of the season. Manzo earned the save in a Thursday win over Concordia-St. Paul.
NSU is now off until heading to Arizona over the spring break.
