The Northern State volleyball team won its fifth consecutive match and second over a ranked opponent this season as the Wolves knocked off No. 2 Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon 3-1 on the road. Set scores went 25-23, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-20 to hand UMD just its second loss of the season.
The Wolves improve to 15-3 overall and 8-3 in NSIC play. It is Northern's first win over Duluth since 2000.
Trailing 20-17 in the first set, the Wolves caught fire and ended set one on an 8-3 run to take an early lead in the match. Northern controlled much of the second set after UMD took an early 2-0, but Northern scored seven of the next eight points to take control and cruise to the 25-15 victory. After Duluth won set three, Northern came out on fire in set three to take a 9-3 lead and held on to clinch the victory.
Kelsey Chambers was one of four Wolves with double-digit kills as she led the team with 17 kills in the win. Chambers also added nine digs and five block assists in the match.
Macey Finizio had 13 kills and hit .433 and also had a career-high eight digs.
Cari McGarvie added 11 kills and five blocks while
Jussy Tuscherer had 10 kills and nine digs.
Tori Biach chipped in with eight kills and four blocks.
Drew Smith recorded her fifth double-double of 2013 as she recorded 48 assists and 12 digs in the win.
Sami Nygaard led the back row with 25 digs and also had a career-best six assists and led Northern with two service aces.
Northern returns home next week for three matches. MSU Moorhead comes to Wachs Arena for a 7 p.m. match Tuesday, while Northern hosts Winona State Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. and Upper Iowa on Oct. 26 for a 3 p.m. match.
