Volleyball Picks Up Second Sweep of the Weekend, Downs UMC

The Northern State volleyball team finished the weekend with its second sweep of the week and eighth of the season as the Wolves defeated Minnesota, Crookston by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-20 Saturday evening inside Wachs Arena.

Northern (13-3, 6-3 NSIC) controlled the match from start to finish as the Wolves never trailed at any point on Saturday. The win gives Northern its third consecutive victory.

Kelsey Chambers led the Northern attack with 13 kills while hitting .429 in the match. Chambers was also just a dig shy of her seventh double-double of the season. Cari McGarvie and Jussy Tuscherer each added 10 kills in the win while Macey Finizio added eight. McGarvie and Tuscherer also had NSU's two aces in the match.

Sami Nygaard led the back row with 14 digs against UMC while Renee Hoffman, Drew Smith and Tuscherer added seven apiece. Smith also led the Wolves with 45 assists in the match. For the weekend Smith compiled 86 assists in just six sets and averaged 14.3 assists per set over the two matches.

As a team, Northern hit .366 while holding the Golden Eagles to just a .059 attack percentage. Saturday's set scores could have been even worse but Northern recorded nine service errors in the match.

Next up, Northern hits the road for a pair of tough road matches next weekend. The Wolves will face St. Cloud State in a 7 p.m. match Oct. 18 and will then travel to play No. 2 Minnesota Duluth in a match beginning at 4 in the afternoon.
