Moorhead, Minn. – After sweeping their first conference series of the year a day earlier, the Northern State Wolves softball team doubled the feat by sweeping the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons on Friday afternoon. The Wolves used big innings in both games to take a 12-4 victory in game one and 11-6 victory in game two.
The Wolves improved their record to 16-20 while improving to .500 in conference play at 7-7. The Dragons dropped to 6-25 and 4-16 in the loop.
Kami Smesmo picked up her seventh win of the year as she pitched the complete game giving up seven hits and four runs while striking out three.
Kelsey Robling went 3-4 with four RBI's and three runs to lead the offensive charge for the Wolves while
Brooke Norris and
Eryn Yancy each collected 2 of the Wolves twelve hits.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Wolves charged back with five runs in the third. Robling hit a single into left field scoring Moran from third and Norris from second to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
Morgan Schultz followed that up with a three run double scoring
Whitney Luhring, Yancy, and Robling.
After conceding two runs in the bottom half of the third and holding a 5-4 lead, the Wolves once again utilized a big inning to increase their lead, this time with a four run fourth. After doubling to right field and swiping third base, Moran scored on a past ball. Yancy hit a double scoring Robling and
Brittany Huback while Schultz singled scoring Luhring.
Holding a 9-4 lead, the Wolves sent three runs across the plate in the top of the fifth, this time two runs scoring on another double from Robling. She then scored on a single from Yancy to give the Wolves a 12-4 lead which would hold for the victory.
In game 2 after trading innings of two runs apiece and the game knotted at 4-4 heading into the fifth, the Wolves opened up into a 9-4 lead.
Ashley Gabler hit a single into center field scoring Luhring. Moran stepped up and singled to centerfield scoring Gabler and Schultz. Huback followed that with a double scoring Moran and Norris to complete the five hit five run inning.
The Wolves added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh which were evened up in the bottom of the seventh to give the Wolves the final of 11-6.
The Wolves recorded 16 hits in game two with a perfect 3-3 from Norris who also scored four runs while Moran finished 3-5 with 3 RBI's and two runs scored.
Kelli Bornander notched her eighth victory of the season pitching the complete game nine hitter. She also struck out four while giving up five earned runs.
The Wolves will return home for a non-conference match up against future Northern Sun member University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday April 10 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
