Wolves fall to #8 Mavericks

MANKATO, MINN. – Playing the final two games of the regular season and facing the eighth ranked team in the country, the Northern State Wolves fell twice to Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota on Monday afternoon. The Wolves fell 2-1 in game one before stumbling 5-0 in the day's second game.

The Mavericks raised their number eight nationally ranked record to 42-8 while taking the NSIC regular season championship with a 23-3 NSIC record, while the Wolves fell to 24-26 while sitting 13-13 in the loop.  

Kami Smesmo pitched an efficient complete game while surrendering six hits from the Mavericks, however five walks hurt her in the effort. 

Minnesota State scored their first run in the third inning as Lindsay Erickson doubled down the right field line scoring Melanie Upchurch. 

In the fifth the Mavericks tacked another run on the board utilizing a pair of doubles to take the 2-0 lead. 

The Wolves got a run back in the sixth as Kelsey Robling doubled into left field and scored on a Whitney Luhring single into right field. 

Luhring posted two of the Wolves five hits in a 2-3 effort and the RBI. 

Game two saw the Wolves limited to just two hits as the Mavericks cruised to a 5-0 victory. Kelli Bornander pitched the complete game striking out three while giving up nine hits. 

The Wolves received hits from Eryn Yancy and Robling while Ashley Gabler reached base on a hit-by-pitch while Brittany Huback coaxed a walk. 

The Wolves will now travel to Rochester, Minnesota for the NSIC Tournament on Thursday, April 26. An announcement will be made when the bracket is released.
