FAYETTE, Iowa – The host Upper Iowa Peacocks drew first blood on Saturday, using a walk-off RBI single to snare a 5-4 win in Game 1, but it was the Wolves who got the last laugh, using the big inning to their advantage in a 14-9 win in Game 2, earning a split on the opening day of a 4-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series.
NSU moved to 14-21 overall and 7-13 in league play. Upper Iowa is now 14-21 on the season and 10-13 in the loop.
The Wolves took a 4-1 lead in Game 1 after a bases-clearing double off the bat of
Max Myers in the top of the third. That hit came after back-to-back singles from
Jesse Gonzalez and
Brent Lawrence.
Zach Miller was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs.
Robbie Rocamora's solo home run in the second accounted for the Wolves' fourth run.
The lead stood until the fifth inning when the Peacocks used a lead-off home run followed by four singles and a sacrifice fly to tie the game. UIU then came up with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to score the go-ahead run to secure the win.
Clayton Nutting absorbed the loss in relief for the Wolves. Starter
Nathan Nietfeld went five innings, striking out five.
The Wolves came roaring back in the nightcap, scoring two in the second, one in the fourth, five in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a sizable 12-0 lead. Upper Iowa countered with three in the seventh to break up the shut-out, but the Wolves got two of those back in the ninth.
Upper Iowa made a late charge in the bottom of the ninth, scoring six in their half of the ninth before the Wolves'
Kris Keating closed the door with a fly out and a ground out to preserve the win.
Starter
Sean Winslow went five complete innings to get the win for the Wolves. Winslow allowed just four hits and no runs while striking out six.
The two teams continue the series tomorrow. First pitch for the two-game set is slated for noon.
