ABERDEEN, S.D. – Having held leads late in both games, the Northern State Wolves (12-20, 3-7 NSIC) gave up big innings to the visitors and future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foes Minot State (14-10), as the Beavers beat the Wolves 8-3 in 10 innings and 7-5.
In the first game, a ten inning affair, the Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings but were unable to scoot another run across the plate.
Caitlin Moran reached base on a swinging bunt and proceeded to steal second and third base. Moran was hit home on a sacrifice fly from
Brittany Huback.
In the second inning
Ashley Gabler singled home Sarah L'Allier from third. With the bases loaded, Moran took a base on balls walk scoring
Rachel South.
Minot State inched their way back into the game after scoring a run in the third and two more in the sixth as the Wolves were unable to get any offense going, picking up just five hits over the final seven innings.
Minot State scored five runs in the top of the tenth to take an 8-3 lead which proved to be the final score.
Kami Smesmo was charged with the loss pitching six innings and giving up ten hits while
Kelli Bornander was the starter pitching four innings and giving up three hits.
Morgan Schultz led the Wolves with a 3-4 effort while South went 2-4 with a run scored.
The Wolves saw a bit of déjà vu in the second game, albeit in seven innings. After giving up a first inning run to the Beavers, Northern State picked up two first inning runs and two more in the second to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Kelsey Robling doubled to centerfield scoring
Brooke Norris and Huback from second and first respectively. In the second inning
Ashley Gabler reached on a fielder's choice scoring L'Allier from third.
Brooke Norris hit a single through the left side scoring Moran from second.
Minot State tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the fifth scoring three runs on two hits and a Wolves error.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Wolves took the lead right back as
Kelsey Robling reached on an error from the shortstop and was boosted to third base on a single from
Whitney Luhring. Robling scored on a groundout from
Eryn Yancy to give the Wolves a 5-4 lead.
The Beavers took control in the top of the seventh scoring three runs on three hits as the Wolves went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half to fall 7-5.
Stephanie Horkey was charged with the loss as she made her second start of the season, pitching the complete game giving up ten hits and striking out three.
The Wolves recorded seven hits including two from Moran while she increased her NSIC leading stolen base total to 30 with four stolen bases on the day.
The Wolves will travel to Minnesota, Crookston on Thursday for a 1 p.m. double header in Crookston, Minn.
