ABERDEEN, S.D. – Pitching her second straight shutout and two hit no walk gem;
Kelli Bornander boosted the Northern State Wolves to their eighth straight victory after the Wolves swept a pair of midweek NSIC contests with Bemidji State.
Combined on the day, the Wolves held the Beavers to just five hits and one unearned run with just one walk and striking out ten batters.
The Wolves improved to 20-20 while jumping to 9-7 in NSIC play after the 9-1 and 5-0 victories over Bemidji State who fell to 9-26 and 2-14 in the loop.
In game one,
Caitlin Moran reached base and stole her league high 33rd base and was hit home on a
Kelsey Robling sacrifice fly.
Brittany Huback scored the Wolves second run of the first inning as
Whitney Luhring reached base on an error from the Beaver shortstop.
Ashley Gabler got the Wolves started in the four-run second inning as she singled through the left side and stole second. Gabler scored on a bunt from
Caitlin Moran, which resulted in an error from the third basemen. With two runners on base, Huback pounded a double into left field scoring Moran and
Brooke Norris. Huback then scored on a sacrifice fly from
Eryn Yancy boosting the Wolves lead to 6-0.
Northern State tacked on another run in the fourth inning as
Morgan Schultz singled into left field scoring
Whitney Luhring.
The Beavers got their lone run of the day in the top of the fifth, utilizing a Wolves error on the lead off hitter and scoring on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fifth the Wolves scored two runs on two hits to give them the five inning 9-1 victory.
Kami Smesmo pitched the complete game three hitter while striking out five, giving up just the unearned run. Moran went 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Wolves offensively.
The second game saw Bornander allow just two base runners while striking out five for her second straight shutout performance. Over her last four games, Bornander is 4-0 with just a 2.00 ERA and three complete games.
Jumping out of the gate, the Wolves scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Moran scored on a
Kelsey Robling triple, her seventh of the season. Robling crossed home plate as Yancy hit a groundout to second base.
The Wolves picked up three more runs in the fourth inning on four hits and an error to lead to a 5-0 lead. The Wolves used two doubles to get the first run across and Robling doubled into right field and was followed by a Luhring double to center field. Luhring scored as Schultz reached base on a fielder's choice. As Sarah L'Allier pinch ran for Schultz, she scored on a
Ashley Gabler single into center field for the 5-0 lead.
Robling and Luhring each secured two of the Wolves seven hits while Robling scored two runs to lead the Wolves offensive charge.
The Wolves will look to add on to their eight game win streak on Saturday April 14th as the third ranked Winona State Warriors visits Aberdeen for a 12 p.m. scheduled double header at Moccasin Creek Field.
