ABERDEEN, S.D. – Propelled by a five run sixth inning in game one and a five-hit shutout pitching performance in game two, the Northern State Wolves swept by the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls 10-2 and 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolves improved to 18-20, setting a new school record for wins in a season. The Cougars, who are in a transition year into the NCAA and 2012-13 members of the NSIC fell to 12-12.
In the first game,
Ashley Gabler hit a home run into right field to give the Wolves an early 2-0 lead in the third inning. The two-run homer was her first on the season, which also scored
Morgan Schultz.
The Wolves got another run in the fourth inning as
Eryn Yancy doubled into left field. She was bumped over to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Rachel South and scored on a Gabler sharp single into right field.
USF utilized a Wolves error to pick up a run in the top of the fifth however the Wolves ran two more runs across the plate in the bottom half.
Caitlin Moran scored on a double from
Brittany Huback into center field. Huback scored as
Whitney Luhring hit a double into left.
Leading 5-1 heading into the sixth, the Cougars tacked on one more run, once again utilizing an error to get the run. The Wolves picked up five runs in the bottom half on four hits and two errors to take the 10-2 victory.
Gabler went 3-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored while Moran, Luhring and Yancy all picked up two hits apiece in the Wolves 12 hit effort. Freshman
Kami Smesmo pitched the complete game five hitter while striking out four, to boost her to her eighth win on the season.
In game two,
Kelli Bornander picked up her first shutout of the season while striking out eight and giving up just five hits.
The Wolves once again utilized the third inning to get the first runs of the game as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Moran singled into left field and was hit home from a Huback triple into left-center field. With Huback on third,
Kelsey Robling hit a single at the second basemen scoring Huback. Robling then scored on an error as Yancy reached base when the Cougar second basemen over threw the first basemen.
The Wolves will put their six game win streak on the line Wednesday afternoon as they host Bemidji State in a 2 p.m. double header at Moccasin Field.
