Walk-off hit spoils Wolves

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The Northern State Wolves (12-18, 3-7 NSIC) had a victory spoiled by a walk-off hit in the second game against St. Cloud State (18-16, 4-4 NSIC) as the Wolves were swept 6-0 and 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.

In game one Kami Smesmo pitched four innings giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out four. In relief, Stephanie Horkey pitched two innings allowing two hits.

The Huskies scored two runs in the first and four in the fourth, while the Wolves were limited to four hits and not advancing a runner past second base.

In the second game, the Wolves jumped on the scoreboard first as Caitlin Moran singled and was moved to third on a bunt from Brittany Huback. Kelsey Robling singled in Moran from third to give the Wolves the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the first, the Huskies put two runs across the plate on five hits.

Northern State picked up a run in the top of the fourth. Morgan Schultz singled to get on base and scored on a single from Caitlin Moran to tie the game at 2-2.

The Wolves took a 3-2 lead in the final frame as Moran hit a lead off single while advancing to second on a wild pitch. Moran then stole her NSIC leading 26th stolen base and scored on a SAC fly from Robling.

However, the Huskies were able to scoot across two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Kelly Olson hit a double scoring Samantha Kanak who reached on a Walk. The game winning run was scored as Jordan Grell hit a single scoring Mikayla Hogan from third.

The Wolves recorded ten hits including a 3-4 effort from leadoff hitter Moran while she scored two runs. Kelli Bornander pitched 6.1 innings taking the loss while striking out seven and giving up nine hits.

The Wolves return home Monday for a 2 p.m. matinee against future NSIC foe Minot State at Moccassin Creek Complex.
