CLERMONT, FLA. – The Northern State (6-8) softball squad received a gem of a game from freshman Kami Smesmo as the Wolves went 1-1 on Friday at the National Training Center Games in Clermont, Florida. The Wolves beat Concordia of New York while falling to West Virginia Wesleyan College 9-0.

The Wolves got their run across the plate against Concordia of New York (3-4) in the bottom of the third as Caitlin Moran walked and stole second, her 11th stolen base on the young season, and advanced to third on a fly out from Brittany Huback. That set up Kelsey Robling, who has hit .500 since playing in Florida, who hit a double to the left field fence scoring Moran.

That is all Smesmo needed as she pitched a three hitter in a complete game effort, striking out eight. The 1-0 score proved to be Smesmo's first career shutout.

Robling ended the game with a perfect 2-2 to go with her rbi double. Eryn Yancy and Morgan Schutlz each picked up a hit as well.

The day's second game saw the Wolves fall to West Virginia Wesleyan College (10-6) in a 9-0, six inning affair. The Bobcats secured 14 hits leading to eight earned runs.

The Wolves, only getting seven hits off the Bobcats, saw Moran in a 2-3 effort and her 12th stolen base on the season.

Kelli Bornander gave up five runs in five innings while Stephanie Horkey gave up three runs in an inning pitched.

The Wolves will finish their spring break slate with a match-up against Alderson-Broaddus College and a final rematch against #21 Grand Valley State with 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. (est.) game times respectively.
