CLERMONT, FLA. – The Northern State Wolves softball team (5-7, 0-0 NSIC) saw déjà vu with rematches and games slipping away. With an extra inning rematch against the 21st ranked team in the country, Grand Valley State, the Wolves saw the eight inning affair end in a 7-5 score while a rematch against Cedarville University saw the Wolves fall 4-2.
In the first game of the day the Wolves fell to Grand Valley State 7-5. Grand Valley jumped on the board in the first inning brining in a run after scoring on a wild pitch.
The Wolves drove in three runs in the bottom of the third.
Ashley Gabler drove in
Brittany Huback with a single up the middle. The Wolves then scored two runs off of throwing errors from the Lakers.
GVSU took three runs back in the top of the fifth while the Wolves scored one in the bottom of the sixth, as Sarah L'Allier scored on a passed ball.
With the score tied, the Wolves second straight game went into an extra inning where the Wolves saw déjà vu with three runs being scored in the top half by the opponent and only one run crossing the plate in the bottom half.
The Wolves were led by
Brittany Huback who had a 4-4 effort driving in a run and scoring a run. Freshman
Kami Smesmo was charged with the loss, pitching eight innings, striking out eight and walking just one.
The second game of the day saw the Wolves matched up against Cedarville University, with the Yellow Jackets taking the 4-2 victory.
Both teams got on the scoreboard in the first inning. The Yellow Jackets got senior
Kelli Bornander into trouble early; however she escaped only giving up one run as the bases were loaded. The Wolves got a run as
Kelsey Robling doubled to center field with the next hitter,
Eryn Yancy, driving her in on a single.
Cedarville knocked in two more runs in the second and another in the third bringing their total to four as the wolves knocked in one run in the fifth for the final score of 4-2.
The Wolves got their run as
Caitlin Moran doubled to left field and was advanced to third on a bunt from
Brooke Norris. Robling then drove in Moran for the RBI single.
Bornander pitched 4.2 innings giving up seven hits and seven walks.
Stephanie Horkey pitched the final 2.1 innings giving up three hits and striking out one.
Robling led with a 3-4 effort, driving in a run and scoring a run while Huback and Morgan Schutlz each had two hits.
