Wolves stumble late

CLERMONT, FLA. – After scoring first and holding leads late in both games today, the Northern State Wolves (5-5, 0-0 NSIC) dropped a pair of games in a 7-6 loss to Georgian Court University and a 5-3 extra inning loss to Cedarville University.

Against Georgian Court, the Wolves jumped all over Illiana Teran, scoring five runs, four in the first and one in the second, as the Wolves worked an early 5-0 lead.

The Wolves opened the lead to a 6-1 score in the fourth, holding that same score until the bottom of the seventh. Over the first six innings, Wolves pitcher Kelli Bornander scattered six hits for just one run. In the seventh the Lions of Georgian College took five hits off her for seven runs (six earned).

The Lions used a walk-off hit for the victory with a double to the centerfield fence.

Kelsey Robling added to her hot-streak in Florida as she had two hits with two rbi's as Brooke Norris and Rachel South each added two hits apiece. Bornander pitched 6.2 innings giving up 12 hits and striking out eight.

In the Wolves second game of the day, Northern jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Eryn Yancy drove in Caitlin Moran in the third inning. The Yellow Jackets got the run back in the next inning as Missy Murphy singled to centerfield, driving in Kelsey Wilson.

With the scored tied in the seventh inning, the Yellow Jackets scored the go-ahead run as Jessica Palm tripled and was driven home on a double from Courtney Teague.

Fighting to continue on, the Wolves scored the tying run by knocking the ball around. Brittany Huback singled and was advanced to second on an Ashley Gabler single. Caitlin Moran hit a single up the left-field line just squeaking by third base and into the outfield scoring Huback.

Sending the game into extra innings, Cedarville knocked in three runs in the top half of the eighth to take a 5-2 lead. The Wolves were able to scrap in a third run as Eryn Yancy drove in Robling before being retired on the side, for a final score of 5-3.

Caitlin Moran led with three hits and an rbi along with two hits from Eryn Yancy. Kami Smesmo pitched all eight innings, striking out six and walking none.

The Wolves will now take a day off before returning to the diamond for rematches against #24 Grand Valley State and Cedarville University at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively (EST).
