ST PAUL, MINN. – Scoring first in both games, the Northern State Wolves (12-16, 3-6 NSIC) were unable to hold leads late in the games as Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears (18-11, 3-3 NSIC) swept the Wolves 3-2 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
In game one,
Caitlin Moran led off with a single up the middle and promptly stole second base. She was then able to find third base on a past ball. While that was happening,
Brooke Norris took bases on balls walk. As Norris was stealing second base, an error on the second basemen sent Moran across home plate.
Concordia-St. Paul picked that run right back up in the bottom half of the first sending Anderson across home plate after she singled and was advanced to second on a bunt, setting the stage for Brennan and the RBI single.
Moran scored her second run of the game in the fourth inning as she singled to right field and circled the bases due to the right fielder misplaying the ball and rolling to the fence, giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Bears knocked in two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 3-2 lead that would prove to be the final score.
Kami Smesmo pitched the complete game giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits. The Wolves were limited to six hits with a 3-4 effort from Moran.
In the second game of the day the Wolves were limited to just six hits again, including a 3-3 effort from
Brittany Huback.
Kelli Bornander pitched five innings giving up five hits and striking out four while be hampered by six walks.
The Wolves again jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Huback singled into right field. The next batter,
Kelsey Robling, reached base on an error by the right fielder which scored Huback.
CSP tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third as Brennan hit a home run into left center field.
In the sixth, the Wolves picked up two more runs to make it a 3-1 game. Huback singled up the middle and was sent to second on a SAC bunt from Robling.
Eryn Yancy then hit her third homerun of the season to give the Wolves the lead.
However, the lead would not hold as the Golden Bears picked up three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 4-3 victory.
The Wolves continue on their road trip as they take on St. Cloud State Sunday in a 12 p.m. match up in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
