Softball holds steady with split

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Northern State Wolves (12-14, 3-3 NSIC) softball team used a late rally in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 victory in game two while falling 3-2 in another close affair in game one to the University of Mary (12-9, 3-3 NSIC) on Wednesday afternoon.

As the Wolves took a 2-0 advantage in game one, scoring in the second and third innings. Kelsey Robling led off the second with a single to left field. With the bases loaded, Lindsey Hubler hit into a fielders choice which scored Robling from third.

The Wolves picked up their second run in the third as Robling hit a sacrifice fly to score Brooke Norris from third.

The Marauders tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth scoring on an error and an illegal pitch. To take the lead in the fifth, the Marauders scored on another Wolves error.

Kami Smesmo pitched the complete game, giving up six hits and striking out three. Giving up three runs, none counted against Smesmo as all three were scored on two Wolves errors.

Offensively Robling went 1-2 with a RBI on a sacrifice fly and scoring a run while Norris went 1-4 and scoring a run.

The game saw a furious Wolves comeback as Kelli Bornander picked up the win in her complete game six hitter.

Jenna Button kicked things off in game two as she smacked a lead off double into centerfield and scored on a single from Brooke Hageness.

Northern State would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth turning an error into two runs. Robling reached on an error and was advanced to third on a Whitney Luhring single. Freshman Eryn Yancy hit a sacrifice fly into left field scoring Robling. Luhring then scored on a Rachel South single.

U-Mary responded in the bottom of the fourth with a three run home run by Kristin Ormsby.

Going into the final frame and down 3-2, the Wolves took advantage of three Marauder errors to seize control and the game. Robling picked up her team leading 24th and 25th RBI's of the season hitting a single with the bases loaded. Luhring followed Robling in the batting order and followed cue with a two run double giving the Wolves a 6-4 lead.

Trying to make things interesting in the bottom half of the inning the Marauders picked up two hits but were unable to scoot any runs across the plate.

Northern State picked up nine hits in the game with 2-4 efforts from both Luhring and Brittany Huback while each of them scored a run.

The Wolves will continue on the road in St. Paul, Minnesota, as the Wolves play Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday March 31st in a 12 p.m. scheduled double header.
