ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team (9-11, 0-0 NSIC) kicked off their home schedule with a sweep of Jamestown College (8-7, 0-0 DAC). The Wolves were led by
Kelsey Robling who had a 4-6 day with two triples and a double while driving in five runs and scoring three. The Wolves were also aided by complete game efforts from their pitchers as
Kami Smesmo took the victory in game one and
Stephanie Horkey replicated in game two.
The Wolves also had a single season record broken as
Caitlin Moran swiped four bases, upping her season total to 18 stolen bases.
Northern State jumped on the scoreboard in the first frame scoring two runs on three hits. Freshman
Eryn Yancy hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring
Brooke Norris while
Whitney Luhring hit a single to right field scoring Robling.
After giving up a run in the top of the second, the Wolves countered with four of their own to pad their lead at 6-1 while adding two more on in the bottom of the fourth. Luhring smacked her second rbi of the game as she singled to right field scoring Robling. Then Luhring scored as Cat Zimmerman hit a double into right field giving the Wolves an 8-2 lead.
The Jimmies would try to stage a rally, however falling short after scoring just three runs in the top of the seventh.
Smesmo was credited with the victory as she pitched the 7 inning complete game, giving up 11 hits, striking out four and walking just one.
The Wolves second game of the day saw junior
Caitlin Moran set the single season steals record as she reached base on a bunt single to lead off the game, Moran swiftly stole second to set the single season record, currently at 18 stolen bases.
Moran scored the games first run as
Brooke Norris hit a single and the speedy Moran rounded the bases. The Wolves got a second run in the first as
Brittany Huback hit home Norris on a single to center field.
Robling added two triples and four rbi's as the Wolves won 8-1, thanks to Horkey's seven inning complete game. Horkey gave up eight hits, striking out three, and walking just two giving up just the one run.
The Wolves will continue their homestand as they host #22 Augustana College in a 1 p.m. double header on Saturday March 24 and play host to Wayne State on Sunday March 25 at 12 p.m. noon.
