CLERMONT, FLA. – The Northern State softball squad (7-9, 0-0 NSIC) split a pair of games on Saturday evening by defeating Alderson-Broaddus College 9-3 before falling to #21 Grand Valley State 9-2 in the evening match-up.

With the game tied 3-3 entering the sixth inning, the Wolves hitting took over. Sophomore Lindsey Hubler singled to left field to have the lead-off hitter reach base. Freshman Morgan Schutlz reaches on an error by the shortstop pushing Stephanie Horkey, who was pinch-running, to scoot over to second. Ashley Gabler singled to left field to load the bases. Caitlin Moran slashed a single to centerfield scoring the go ahead run leaving the bases loaded.

Two batters later, Kelsey Robling stepped up to the plate and drilled a grand slam over the left-center fence, her first grand slam of her college career.

Kelli Bornander picked up the win in relief as Kami Smesmo left the game after being hit by a line drive in the foot. Smesmo pitched five innings giving up seven hits. Bornander pitched two innings, surrendering just one hit for the victory.

The Wolves picked up ten hits in the game led by a 3-3 effort from Caitlin Moran who also scored two runs and stole two bases. Moran now sits just two stolen bases shy of the Wolves single season record, currently at 16 stolen bases.

The Wolves second game of the evening was an error-filled affair, seeing each team commit four errors apiece.

Giving up three runs in the top of the first, the Wolves countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half, however, the power of the twenty-first ranked Lakers proved too much in the 9-2 defeat.

Stephanie Horkey was charged with the loss for the Wolves who picked up just four hits.

Northern State will take on Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State in a triangular on Saturday March 17th in a 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. match-up respectively.
