Softball pushes strong 2-0 start

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VADNIAS HEIGHTS, MINN. – Northern State's (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) kicked off their season with a bang as they defeated both the University of Crookston (0-1, 0-0 NSIC) and University of Minnesota-Duluth (5-4, 0-0 NSIC) in non-conference action in Vadnias Heights, Minnesota.

In the 5-3 victory over the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston, Kelsey Robling hit the Wolves first home run of the season while driving in two runs while freshman Kami Smesmo picked up the complete game victory, striking out six.

The Wolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning as Eryn Yancy, Rachel South and Brittany Huback all scored.

The Golden Eagles tied the game in the top of the fourth on two consecutive doubles.

Northern State pulled into the lead for good as Shultz doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Robling hit a sacrifice fly scoring Schultz. The fifth run came from a Robling home run to centerfield.

The game did not end without drama as the bases were loaded for the Golden Eagles with one out when Smesmo got Rachel Schoenborn to ground out to Brooke Norris who turned the double play for the Wolves.

The Wolves second game of the day came in the form of a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth. Whitney Luhring and Eryn Yancy both hit home runs for the Wolves driving in two runs apiece as Caitlin Moran drove in a run.

Kelli Bornander threw the complete game, seven hitter for the Wolves, picking up her first victory in the young season.

The Wolves collected a run in each of the first two innings, the first after Caitlin Moran  scored on a Whitney Luhring single. The Wolves got their second run when Huback scored on a Moran single.

Yancy added two more for the Wolves as she hit a home run to left field scoring Robling.

Minnesota-Duluth scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits as Luhring offered an insurance run in the top of the fifth with her home run to left-center.

The Bulldogs were able to bring in one run in the bottom of the seventh, showing the final score of 5-4.

The Wolves continue their games in the dome of Vadnais Hieghts with a 9 a.m. game against MSU Moorhead and a rematch against Minnesota-Duluth at 12 p.m.
