WAYNE, Neb. - The Northern State University softball team fell victim to Wayne State senior pitcher Katie Goetzinger's third career perfect game in Game 1 and a pair of home runs in Game 2, falling 8-0 in six innings and 3-1 to the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball action.
NSU slips to 6-16 overall and 0-4 in league action while the host Wildcats improved to 16-9 on the season and a perfect 4-0 following the opening weekend of NSIC play.
Goetzinger kept the Wolves off balance throughout the game, retiring all 18 batters she faced, 10 of them by strikeout. The senior struck out the side in the first and sixth innings to cap the perfect game effort.
For her part, NSU freshman
Jordan Florey kept the Wildcats within striking distance through the first five innings, allowing just three runs in those five innings before WSC erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game. All five of those runs came with two outs in the inning.
Game two proved to be a tightly contested affair. The Wildcats managed a pair of home runs - a two-run shot in the first and a solo blast in the third - to inflict enough damage to claim the win.
After giving up the early lead, the Wolves cut the advantage to just one with a third inning score.
Allyson Teclaw led off the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a
Lindsey Cegla ground out. Junior
Brooke Norris then scored Teclaw with a sacrifice fly to give the Wolves their lone run of the series.
The Wildcats responded with the insurance homer in the bottom half of the inning.
Sophomore
Stephanie Horkey absorbed the loss for the Wolves, allowing just the three runs and striking out six in a complete-game effort.
Jordan Harris picked up the win for the Wildcats, while Goetzinger came on for the save.
The Wolves are slated to begin an eight-game homestand on Tuesday. Stay tuned to
