SPICER, Minn. - Northern State University senior
Ronnie Sellers cracked a pair of RBI doubles, including a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth of Game 2, to lead the Wolves to a pair of one-run victories over Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday.
The Wolves pulled off the sweep, their first of the year, with a 3-2 win in Game 1 and an 8-7 victory in Game 2.
With the wins, the Wolves improved to 6-14 overall and 4-10 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play while the Golden Eagles remain winless at 0-22 overall and 0-14 in league action.
The Wolves held off the Golden Eagles in a battle of one-run innings in Game 1. The Wolves scored in the first, fourth and fifth innings, while the Golden Eagles plated a run in the fifth and sixth stanzas.
Sellers' double in the bottom of the fifth in Game 1 scored fellow senior
Michael Cross, who drew a lead-off walk to start the inning. Cross also scored in the first inning.
The top six hitters in the Wolves' line-up each picked up one hit apiece.
Sean Winslow tossed a complete-game five-hitter on the mound for the Wolves. Both UMC runs came via solo home runs from Ryan Kilzhaber and Charlie Pelzer. Pelzer finished the game 2-for-2 from the plate. Winslow also fanned seven while walking just one.
The big inning played a key role in the flow of Game 2. The Wolves put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first only to have the Golden Eagles respond with a five-run fifth to take the lead.
A three-run sixth put the Wolves back in front, but only briefly. UMC tied it with a pair of unearned runs - one in the seventh and one in the top of the ninth.
Looking to avoid extra innings, the Wolves again turned to Sellers in the bottom of the ninth. After
Jack Thompson was hit by a pitch to lead off, junior
Ryan Hoffman sacrificed him to second.
UMC then elected to intentionally walk
Lucas Jung to get to Sellers, who delivered with his second double of the day to score Thompson from second.
Sellers finished with a 2-for-5 effort at the plate, while
Zach Miller went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, three of which came on a 3-run homer to left in the first.
Cross picked up the win in relief for the Wolves, allowing just one unearned run in two innings of work.
The two teams will resume the series on Monday with a noon start.
