WINONA, Minn. – The host Winona State University Warriors used big innings in both games and strong pitching performances from their starters to complete the 2-day sweep with a pair of shutout victories over the Wolves, winning 9-0 in Game 1 and 10-2 in the series finale.
The loss drops the Wolves to 2-10 overall and 0-4 following the opening series of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. WSU moved to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in league games.
WSU used a complete-game one-hit performance from junior Tony Meuller in Tuesday's opener and exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. That inning made what had been just a 3-run Warrior lead a 7-run cushion and put the Warrior in control the remainder of the way.
Game two began similarly to the second game of Monday's doubleheader. The Warriors manufactured a run in the first inning, but Wolves' starter
Lucas Jung was able to hold the host team in check until the fifth inning.
After a lead-off fly-out in the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors rattled off a single, triple and home run in their next three at bats en-route to a four-run inning. WSU added another five to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth to complete the scoring.
The Warriors' Andrew DeSousa scattered four hits through his six innings of work to pick up the win. Jung absorbed the loss for the Wolves.
Offensively, Jung,
Max Myers,
Ronnie Sellers,
Jack Thompson and
Michael Cross all collected hits for the Wolves on the day.
NSU is back on the field on Saturday to begin another four-game NSIC series at Wayne State.
