ABERDEEN, S.D. – The University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs showed off their second place ranking in the latest AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll on Friday, downing Northern State in straight sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-16) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball action.
The loss marks the third straight for the Wolves, who slipped to 11-11 overall and 6-9 in NSIC play. UMD remains undefeated on the season with 24-0 overall and 15-0 NSIC marks.
The Bulldogs used a series of runs in each set to pull away with the victories, including a late 9-2 run in the third and final set that earned them some distance after a 5-0 NSU run had closed the gap to just 16-13. The NSU comeback was fueled by three UMD attacking errors and a pair of
Emma Filiaga kills.
The Wolves were led by a 7-kill, 4-block effort from sophomore middle blocker
Paula Martins and four kills apiece from seniors
Claire Kopfmann and
Kaili Aiono.
Kate Lange had 16 kills and April Hansen had 14 to lead the Bulldog offensive effort. Julie Rainey had 18 digs to pace a defensive effort that held NSU to just a .077 attack percentage at the net.
NSU remains on the road to take on Bemidji State on Saturday.
