ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University rallied from .100 and .103 attack percentages in the first two sets of the night to post a .235 percentage the rest of the way, taking the final three sets of the night to salvage a 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-9) victory over the University of Mary on Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball action.
Sophomore
Paula Martins helped spark the rally, posting seven kills in the fourth set alone, en-route to a 16-kill night. Martins committed just five errors and came up with a pair of blocks at the net in the late going.
Now winners of four of their last five matches, the Wolves moved to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in NSIC play with their second straight five-set win. U-Mary slipped to 2-18 overall and 1-10 in the loop.
Carli Peterson and
Kaili Aiono chimed in with 11 kills apiece, while
Claire Kopfmann stepped into the starting lineup and added nine kills and four blocks to aid the NSU effort.
Morgan Richardson directed the offensive effort with 49 assists, five digs and a pair of blocks.
Allison Opp and Julie Paradine combined for 34 of the team's 54 kills for the Marauders, while Lauren Boldt added 11 and Allison Adams got in on seven of the team's 14 blocks. The Marauders, however, found it difficult to connect points in the final three sets.
Saturday's meeting sets up a re-match on Tuesday, this time in Marauder territory. First serve in U-Mary's McDowell Activity Center is set for 7 p.m.
