MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Northern State University win streak now stands at seven after a pair of non-conference victories over Minot State University and Adelphi (N.Y.) University on Saturday, the second of two days at the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragon Volleyball Classic.
With the wins, the Wolves, who have not lost since a season-opening set-back to 12th ranked Emporia State, now stand at 7-1 overall heading into next week's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference slate. The seven-game win streak is the longest by any NSU team in more than a decade, surpassing a six-game streak to end the 2002 campaign.
The Wolves claimed their first win of the day in straight sets over Minot State. All three sets ended with a final score of 25-16, as the Beavers slipped to 1-10 overall.
Senior
Jordan Schaffer led a balanced NSU attack, finishing with nine kills and a .450 hitting percentage. Kayla Ysteboe added eight, while freshman middle blocker Paula Martins got in on five of the Wolves' six team blocks. That defensive effort helped hold the Beavers to a .000 attack percentage.
Yesteboe, Martins and junior Amber Bloom took charge of the second match, combining for 44 of the team's 64 kills in the 25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 25-12 victory. Senior Megan Gilbraith added 31 assists and 16 digs, guiding the Wolves to a solid .315 team hitting percentage.
Bloom and Schaffer were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Wolves return home for a brief rest before hitting the road again to open NSIC play on Tuesday at Minnesota-Duluth. NSU then hosts defending NCAA II national champions Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and St. Cloud State on Saturday to open the 2010 home slate. The team will also celebrate an alumni reunion next weekend in conjunction with the annual Gypsy Days celebration.
