GAME TWO BOX
ABERDEEN, S.D. – “Offensive output” would be the best term to describe the doubleheader between Concordia University and Northern State University Wednesday at Fossum Field, as the two teams combined to score 66 runs in two games in splitting the NSIC twinbill. Concordia took the first game 20-8 in eight innings (nine scheduled) and the Wolves took the second game 20-18 to earn their first NSIC victory of the season.
The split brings the Wolves record to 4-23 overall on the season and 1-9 in the Northern Sun.
The Golden Bears used two very good innings to display their offensive capabilities, as they recorded nine runs in the fifth inning and eight runs in the eighth inning. The eight runs in the eighth inning gave the Golden Bears a victory via the ten-run rule.
James Paul led the Wolves at the plate with a 4-4 effort including two RBI. He also went 2-2 in stolen base attempts.
Nathan Zacher went 2-4 with two RBI featuring two doubles. He also scored a run.
Derek Hoellein took the loss on the mound after surrendering 10 earned runs in four innings. He allowed eight hits, walked three batters, and struck out three in falling to 0-2 on the year.
The second game saw the Wolves jump out to an early 5-0 lead after one full inning. Ronnie Sellers hit a bases-clearing double while the bags were juiced to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead. A home run by Kelly Coates, the next batter, put the Wolves up 5-0 to start the game.
The Wolves used some Concordia errors in rattling off six runs scored in both the fourth and fifth innings, and a two-run shot by Sellers in the bottom of the sixth gave the Wolves two insurance runs that they would end up needing in earning the 20-18 win.
Sellers led the Wolves with a 3-5 effort at the plate, featuring four runs scored and five RBI.
Kelly Coates went 3-5 with three runs scored and four RBI in the win.
Rob Smith added a 2-3 effort at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI.
Thane Lees picked up the win after entering the game in the fourth inning. He went 1-2/3 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits.
The Wolves are back in action this weekend when they host the University of Minnesota Duluth in a four-game homestand.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
