La Moure, N.D. – The Northern State University baseball team finished out their four-game series with St. Cloud State Monday at Townsend Field in La Moure, N.D. and fell to the NSIC leaders by a 21-2 final score.
The loss brings the Wolves record to 5-37 overall and 2-22 in the NSIC. The win improves the Huskies' mark to 34-9 and 21-5 in the NSIC.
The Huskies pounded out 24 hits compared to the Wolves' 8 and looked every bit the team to beat down the homestretch of the NSIC race.
The Huskies started off the scoring right away, using consecutive singles and stolen bases to put three runners across the plate to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
After the Huskies opened up the game with a three-run first inning, the Wolves answered with a run of their own after Michael Cross doubled off the right center fence, two feet from leaving the yard, and scored James Paul from second.
A sacrifice fly by Nate Hammes would bring in Travis Cariveau to stake the Huskies a 4-1 lead in the top of the second. A single by Joey Benke brought in Brian Hansen to give the Huskies a 5-1 lead.
A bases-clearing triple by Jordan Smith, and an ensuing error by the Wolves trying to throw him out at third allowed the Huskies to score four runs in the top of the fourth with one swing of the bat and stake a 9-1 lead.
The potent Husky offense added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase their lead to 12-1.
After a walk by Bryce Anglin, a two-out double to left center by Adam Brion pushed him over to third, but the next Northern batter flew out to centerfield and the scoring threat was over.
The Huskies poured it on for nine runs over the last four innings to grab a 21-1 lead. The Wolves added another run in the bottom of the ninth after Michael Cross reached on a double to left , Nathan Zacher ripped another one to switch spots on the bases with Cross and give the Wolves their second run of the game.
Lucas Jung took the loss on the mound after he surrendered 12 runs (all earned) in five innings. He walked two and struck out four while allowing 12 hits.
Michael Cross went 3-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored to lead the Wolves offensively.
James Paul went 1-4 with a run scored.
