MANKATO, Minn. – The bats were going, but the result remained the same from the day before for the Northern State University baseball squad, with the Wolves falling to the #23 Minnesota State University Mavericks by scores of 12-9 and 10-4 Monday in Mankato, Minn.
The losses drop the Wolves to 3-16 overall on the year, including 0-4 in the NSIC.
The Wolves held tight with the nationally ranked Mavericks in the first game, pounding out 11 hits to 12 by Minnesota State. The Wolves, however, left 10 runners on base compared to just six by the Mavericks in accounting for the difference in runs scored.
In a new feature for the NSIC baseball season, teams play nine innings in the first game of conference doubleheaders and seven in the second. The Wolves battled with the Mavericks through the first seven innings, trailing just 11-9, but the Mavericks added another insurance run in the top of the ninth and the Wolves could not score in falling 12-9.
Junior Adam Brion, batting leadoff for the Wolves, finished 2-5 with a walk while knocking in three runs (two on a single in the fourth inning) and scoring twice. He also finished 1-1 on stolen base attempts.
James Paul finished 2-2 with three walks and also scored two runs and Lucas Jung finished 3-5 with a double.
Taylor Morsching took the loss on the mound after allowing eight earned runs (nine total) on nine hits in four innings of work. The freshman also issued five free passes and struck out one batter.
The second game saw the Wolves defense become inconsistent in registering six errors on defense. The offense fell asleep somewhat in only coming away with five total hits compared to 13 by the potent Maverick offense.
Payton McCleary went 1-2 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead Northern State at the plate. James Paul finished 1-3 with a two RBI double in the second inning.
Lucas Jung took the loss after allowing nine runs (five earned) on 12 hits in five innings of work. He struck out one and walked one in falling to 1-2 on the year.
The Wolves are next in action this coming weekend with an NSIC matchup with Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn.
