SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Competing in Sioux Falls for the second time in two weeks, the Northern State University Wolves had a full squad in action over the weekend as they took part in the annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday and Saturday at Howard Wood Stadium, their final meet before heading to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships next weekend.
The Wolves, as a team, came home with more than 20 top ten finishes, including five individual and four relay top-five finishes.
Sophomore
Jon Evenson highlighted the day with an individual win in the men's javelin. Evenson hefted a toss of 55.89 meters (183-04), nearly ten feet farther than his previous season best of 173-10.
The throwing events as a whole proved to be a strong point for the Wolves, as sophomore
Tanya Vassar and freshmen
Kim Anderson and
Krystal Lacey also posted personal bests in the women's javelin. Vassar's toss of 33.13 meters (108-08) was good for a second place finish, while Anderson finished fourth with a mark of 30.26 meters (99-03). Lacey finished just behind in sixth place with a mark of 29.13 meters (92-03).
Junior
Amanda Madden posted a trio of top-10 finishes, placing second in the hammer throw (53.83 meters; 176-07), fourth in the discus (43.83 meters; 143-09) and eighth in the shot put (13.20 meters; 43-03.75). Madden, who has already qualified for the national meet in the hammer, set a second provisional qualifying effort in the discus, surpassing the provisional standard of 43.00 meters.
Freshman
Melodi Boke claimed sixth place in the shot put as well with a mark of 13.31 meters (43-08), good for an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, while sophomore
Katie Smith's toss of 39.92 meters (131-00) was good for seventh place in the discus.
The Wolves also got several solid efforts on the track. Freshman
Richard Keroack clocked a 1:57.32 in the men's 800 meters, good for sixth place. That time, a personal best for Keroack, was the best time by any member of the Wolves' squad this season.
Junior
Bill Cameron, running for the first time this spring in uniform after sitting out much of the outdoor season with an injury, put an exclamation mark on his first meet back with a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and a fifth place effort in the 110-meter hurdles. Cameron clocked a time of 55.58 in the 400-meter race, while finishing in 15.01 seconds in the 110-meter event, just four tenths of a second off his personal best and just shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying effort.
Senior
Trevor Steen also put a strong finish on the 110-meter hurdles, finishing sixth in a time of 15.26 seconds, a significant season improvement over his previous best time.
On the women's side, sophomore
Kari Linneman registered a strong effort in the 3,000 meters, finishing eighth in that race in a time of 10:42.14.
The Wolves will now turn their attention to the NSIC Championships, slated for May 8-9 in Wayne, Neb. This will be the first conference outdoor meet since the NSIC expanded to 14 teams.
