ABERDEEN, S.D. –
Northern State University freshman Austin Suther and sophomore Tanya Vassar each finished seventh in their respective events at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Multi-Events, which concluded Tuesday afternoon at NSU's Swisher Stadium.

Suther garnered a total 5,788 points in his first ever decathlon, earning two team points with his seventh place finish.  Junior teammate Cody Hageman, who began the day in 13th place, worked his way up the standings throughout the day to finish in ninth place with 5,382 points, just out of scoring position.

Both Suther and Hageman struggled in the discus, the second event of the day, but came back to post personal bests in the javelin throw to set themselves up for the strong finishes.  Hageman set a new PR with his first throw in the javelin, good for a mark of 42.07 meters (138-00), while Suther came through with a mark of 47.98 (157-05) in his first competitive attempt at that discipline.

Suther then ended the day with a fourth place finish in the 1,500 meters to solidify his spot in the scoring.  Hageman was just back in seventh place, moving past Wayne State's Cody Diehl and into the ninth position.

Bemidji State junior Zac Prebel claimed his third straight NSIC decathlon victory with a mark of 6,223 points despite a rare no-height performance in the pole vault.  Minnesota-Duluth's Chris Parno was second with 6,086 points on the strength of his victory in the day-ending 1,500 meters.

Vassar set personal bests in four of the seven events in the women's heptathlon as she also claimed a pair of team points with her seventh place mark of 4,083 points.  The sophomore entered the day in eighth place and briefly dropped to ninth after the long jump to open the day.

She then vaulted into sixth place after a personal best effort in the javelin with a mark of 32.06 meters (105-02), and was able to hang on for the seventh place spot after a windy 800 meter run to end the day.

Heather Miller (St. Cloud State) claimed the overall victory with an NCAA automatic qualifying and NSIC record-breaking performance.  Her mark of 4,818 points broke the previous record of4,755 points, set just last spring by MSU Moorhead's Ashley Roemer.

Minnesota-Duluth's Traci Pottinger (4,625 points) and Wayne State's Jade Lippman (4,449 points) finished second and third, respectively, with NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
