ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball squad earned their second doubleheader sweep of the season Tuesday when they took two games form inter-Aberdeen rival Presentation College by scores of 7-0 and 13-3 at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, S.D.
The Wolves improve to 9-27 overall on the year after the two non-conference victories.
The first game was a bit of a coming out party for second baseman
Adam Brion, going 4-4 with on four singles, two of which were bunt singles. He also scored a run and collected an RBI.
Aaron Kappes also did some damage at the plate, going 1-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored as the Wolves racked up 10 hits and seven runs. The Wolves got on the board in the first inning and never looked back in taking the victory 7-0.
Trent Bestland earned his second win of the season after throwing seven scoreless innings to earn the complete-game shutout. He allowed only two hits while striking out two batters and also walked one.
The second game was a little different, as the Wolves used a seven-run third inning to erase a three-run deficit to go ahead for good after using two Presentation errors to their advantage.
Leading the charge for the Wolves was
Nathan Zacher who went 2-3 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Tom Keiser also had a nice day at the dish, going 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
James “J.J.” Martin earned his first victory of the season, going 4-1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
The Wolves will close out their season this weekend when they take on their inter-state rivals Augustana College on Saturday and Sunday in Sioux Falls, S.D. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start time.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
