REDFIELD, S.D.
– It was a tale of two teams Monday in Redfield, S.D. for the Northern State Wolves baseball team, as they were able to pound out 15 runs in game one, but only one in game two in losing both to the visiting #23 Wayne State College Wildcats by scores of 23-15 and 10-1.  Altogether, 101 total runs were scored by the two teams in the four-game series.

With the losses the Wolves fall to 5-23 overall and 1-15 in the Northern Sun.  The Wildcats improve to 30-8 overall and 18-1 in the NSIC.

The Wolves fought toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked squad through three innings, trailing only 4-0 before a 12-run fourth inning that saw six of their batters get two shots at the plate. The Wolves continued to fight through the remainder of the game, getting one run in their half of the fourth inning, and two in the fifth before a nine-run sixth inning brought them back within eight runs.  Each team then recorded three runs in their part of the seventh inning to close out the 23-15 final score in a game that amassed more than three hours of playing time.

Senior centerfielder Aaron Kappes continued his torrent streak of late, going 4-5 with four RBI and two runs scored in the losing effort, while reaching base safely five times in the game.  Nathan Zacher put together a 3-4 game at the dish, recording two RBI and four runs scored of his own, and Andrew Lunsetter recorded four RBI and two runs scored in his 3-4 day at the plate.  Three of Lunsetter's four RBI came on a dinger to right field in the Wolves' nine-run sixth inning.

Freshman Michael Gardner took the loss on the hill, allowing six earned runs on six hits with six walks and one strikeout in three innings.

Game two saw those hot bats cool as the Wolves only recorded three hits in the game.  Aaron Kappes once again led the charge with his 2-3 effort and Nathan Zacher put the lone run on the board with his solo homer to centerfield in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Dustin Harvey
took his first loss of the year, going through six innings allowing 10 earned runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts.  Austin Simons threw the final frame, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts.

The Wolves will look to rebound on Wednesday, April 22nd when they take on Minnesota-Morris in Morris, Minn.  The doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
