RICHFIELD, Minn. – The Northern State University baseball squad played a two-day four-game series with the University of Minnesota-Duluth Friday and Saturday at the Richfield High School baseball field in Richfield, Minnesota, and headed back home with a 1-3 record over the four games. The Wolves lost by scores of 0-4 and 3-7 on Friday before earning a split on Saturday by scores of 6-3 and 0-7.
The Wolves are now 5-17 overall on the season and 1-9 in the Northern Sun.
Trent Bestland took the loss on the hill in the first game, working a compete game six-inning pitchers duel, allowing four hits and three earned runs with one strikeout.
Offensively,
Aaron Kappes led the team at the dish, going 2-3 while
James Paul and
Lucas Jung each recorded one hit apiece.
In the second game on Friday,
James Torigian was the losing pitcher after going through four innings allowing eight hits and four runs and two walks.
Nick Wallentiny and
Nathan Zacher each pitched an inning of relief with both allowing one run apiece.
Senior leadoff batter
Aaron Kappes once again led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI, a double, and a run scored. Fellow senior
Tom Keiser went 1-3 with an RBI as well.
On Saturday, the Wolves earned their first win of the season behind some stellar pitching by senior righty
Dustin Harvey. Harvey went seven innings in registering a complete game to lead the Wolves to a 6-3 final score to lead the Wolves to their first conference victory of the season. He gave up two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in holding the Duluth batters he faced to a .160 batting average. Harvey is now 2-0 in his two appearances with a 3.75 earned run average.
Tom Keiser led the squad at the dish, going 1-3 with a three-RBI double in the fifth inning.
Nathan Zacher and
Dillon Talley each recorded an RBI and a run scored with Zacher going 1-2 and Talley going 1-3 at the plate to account for five of the Wolves' six runs batted in.
In the second half of Saturday's twin bill, the Wolves' bats slowed down once again as they were shut out on the scoreboard and only recorded four hits.
Aaron Kappes once again led the squad, going 2-4 to record one half of the Wolves' hits.
Junior righty
Chris Ahrenberg took the loss on the hill, working though 3-1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs with one walk. He was relieved by
James Martin who threw 1-2/3 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with two walks.
Nick Wallentiny closed out the game with one inning of scoreless no-hit work with one strikeout.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
