WAYNE, Neb. – The Wayne State pitching staff held the Northern State Wolves to just three hits on the day while tossing a pair of shutouts on Saturday as the Wildcats held off NSU in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader. The Wildcats picked up their fifth and sixth straight wins with the 11-0 and 2-0 victories, improving to 25-12 overall and 10-1 in NSIC play.
The Wolves, now 3-24 overall, struggled at the plate, getting just 16 at bats in Game 1 and coming away hitless. The Wildcats, meanwhile, jumped out to an early lead, scoring all 11 of their runs in the first three innings of the 5-inning contest.
NSU did get something going in Game 2, as senior
Heather Olson came up with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, accounting for two of the team's three hits in that game. The Wildcats, however, countered with seven hits and two late-inning runs, as they held on for the tight win.
The Wolves will return home for the first time this season, as they get set to host Valley City State on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader. NSU will then take on the University of Mary in an NSIC match-up on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. on both days.
