KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Northern State University softball squad dropped back-to-back shutout decisions on Sunday in its first two games of a 10-game stretch at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday. The Wolves, who went 1-5 to open the season back in February, fell to Ferris State, by a 7-0 count in the Spring Games opener before falling 1-0 to The College of St. Rose in the afternoon game.
NSU committed three errors in Game 1, leading to a trio of unearned runs while managing just two hits at the plate offensively. The Wolves also stranded three runners throughout the game, all three of which were in scoring position.
Fresmen
Brittany Huback and
Whitney Luhring, who manned the corner infield positions for the Wolves, came up with NSU's only two hits of the day, both singles. Huback was also stranded at third twice in three plate appearances.
Freshman hurler
Kelli Bornander took the loss on the mound, going five innings and allowing just three earned runs. Bornander also struck out four batters while issuing just one walk.
Breanna Milnes took the mound for Game 2, tossing a solid complete game for the Wolves. The senior notched six strikeouts and just one walk, but took the loss after giving up an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning.
That run proved to be the difference in the game, as the Wolves put together four hits but left four runners on base in the loss. NSU left a pair of runners stranded in the first inning, and another at third in the top of the sixth.
After issuing a lead-off walk to Luhring to start the seventh inning, Golden Knights pitcher Nicole Welch retired the next three batters on a pair of pop-ups and a strikeout to end the game.
NSU returns to the field on Monday, taking on Tiffin at noon and Chadron State at 2 p.m. in Day 2 action.
