Wolves Drop Non-Conference Doubleheader in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Northern State Wolves baseball squad continued their stay in sunny Arizona Monday with a non-conference doubleheader against fellow Northern Sun member St. Cloud State.  The Huskies swept the Wolves in the doubleheader by scores of 11-1 and 5-1 in the two games.

With the loss the Wolves fall to 2-5 on the year.

In game one, the Wolves were not able to get the bats going and were held to one lone run in the game.  Chris Ahrenberg took the loss on the hill, going six innings while giving up 10 earned runs on 10 hits.  He also issued five walks and struck out four Husky batters.  Nathan Zacher pitched one inning of relief and issued one walk.

Offensively, right fielder Lucas Jung accounted for three of the four Wolves' hits as he went 3-3 with a stolen base and an RBI single in the 4th inning.  Matt Hovendick got a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning for the Wolves other hit.

In the second game, James Torigian took the loss for the Wolves after going through three innings of work, allowing four earned runs, issuing one walk, and striking out one husky batter.  Jon Bitz pitched two scoreless innings of relief work and issued one walk and struck out one batter.  Nick Wallentiny worked one inning of scoreless ball, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Offensively, the Wolves were led by Nathan Zacher's 3-3 (all singles) day at the plate, and Scott Iano's 2-3 day that included a stolen base and an RBI single for the Wolves lone run.  Tom Keiser also went 2-3 and scored the run off Iano's single, and James Paul also went 2-3 in the second game.

The Wolves will look to rebound tomorrow as they continue their sunny weather baseball in Phoenix with a doubleheader against Dakota State.
