KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After picking up their third win of the season on Monday, the Northern State Unviersity softball squad won their second straight game on Tuesday before dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision in eight innings in the nightcap to earn a split on Day 3 of the Wolves' week-long stay at the Rebel Spring Games.
NSU senior
Breanna Milnes tossed a complete 1-run game while striking out seven batters in a 7-1 win over Stonehill in Game 1. Freshmen
Ashley Gabler and
Whitney Luhring combined to go 5-for-8 from the plate to give the Wolves an offensive boost. Gabler blasted her first career home run in the first inning, while smacking out a 2-RBI single in the fourth. Luhring singled in her first three at bats and scored NSU's fifth and final runoff the game in the fourth inning on a
Lindsey Cegla single.
Milnes earned her second win of the year with the complete-game effort as the Wolves improved to 3-8 on the year with the win.
Game 2 proved to be a back-and-forth battle with neither team giving in until the bitter end. The Wolves jumped out to the early 2-run lead in the top of the first inning only to watch Wheeling Jesuit respond with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
That sparked a scoreless draw for the next six innings, despite scoring threats by both teams in the late going. The game finally went to a tie-breaker situation in the eighth inning. NSU failed to score their base runner, while WJU was able to take advantage of their scoring position to secure the win.
Freshman
Kelli Bornander took the loss for the Wolves, going all 7+ innings on the mound without giving up a single earned run in the outing.
